Tomorrow: When The War Began - Official Trailer

Can’t wait for this movie to come out. Anyone who has been to school in Australia from the 90’s onwards will have read the books it is based on. Great teen/young adult series.

Justin's Ineffable Rantings: The absurdity of the Government's attacks on Tony Abbott

It really baffles me that the Government would attack Tony Abbott for his dedication to remaining physically fit. We live in one of the most morbidly obese and unhealthy nations in the world – we should be admiring our political leaders of any flavour who seek to set an example and remain…

Facebooking For A Fight

Cyberbullying has been in the media quite a bit recently and has even been blamed for suicides. I have to ask the question though - if you ARE being bullied through social media sites such as Facebook or Twitter or even MSN (does anyone still use MSN regularly?) or text message what is wrong with hitting the ‘delete’ or ‘block’ button? It’s simple - remove your connection with them, don’t log on, delete their text message before you’ve opened it.You can’t be hurt emotionally if you don’t see what is going on. Ignorance really is bliss

I know it is very easy for bullies to hide behind technology and I don’t condone their behaviour, but if you don’t take the bait how can you get hurt? Take the higher ground, don’t give them the satisfaction of getting upset.

Alcohol and testosterone - a lethal mix

Tonight, as I watched the first few stories of the news with a drink in hand I was saddened to hear of the tragic story out of the Sunshine Coast last night. 3 young men went over the side of a cliff, tragically 1 was found dead at the bottom of the cliff by emergency workers, another died in hospital today. The third is in a critical condition. It has been confirmed a group was drinking in the park prior to the incident and a verbal fight took place.

I am purely speculating, but to me it sounds as if one of the fellas involved in the fight walked off to get a bit of air and cool down, he’s climbed over the fence and has subsequently fallen to his death. Two of his mates have then tried to help him and have also fallen over the edge.

The common denominator of alcohol cannot be ignored. I like most 20-something guys enjoy a drink or three - and drink to excess on a regular basis. I don’t condone binge drinking, but will admit to anyone, I do binge drink regularly. Why do I do it? For a number of reasons, the first being confidence. I’ll talk to anyone after a few drinks about anything. I recall at a friends 21st birthday a fortnight ago I was talking to a female friends boyfriend about fishing, cars and betting. I couldn’t give a flying fuck about either of those subjects, but I’d had a few beers and was suddenly asking what kind of line the fish was caught on and if the car had a turbo.

Alcohol also gives me an excuse to behave in what can only be described as a socially reprehensible way. An old work friend of mine recently left our previous employer - I was invited to her going away drinks and was able to catch up with some mutual friends. Then the beer began flowing and I found myself in situations where I could have been arrested and charged for public exposure. Certainly not one of my proudest moments.

Alcohol also makes people angry, and this appears to be the case in the Sunshine Coast tragedy. A few mates have a few too many beers and a bit of verbal biff takes place. In my experience, as people become more lubricated with alcohol conversation often becomes serious and emotions begin to come to the surface. I have had many alcohol fueled ‘heated conversations’ with ‘friends’ and even a few situations where I’ve swung a punch and had punches swung at me.

You really have to ask what is the point of drinking to get drunk when things like what has happened on the Sunshine Coast occur. Two people have lost their lives, and a third is fighting for his. Alcohol and testosterone is a lethal mix and there are far too many stories involving young men and alcohol and drug related violence. Something needs to be done to curb the binge drinking culture Australians have proudly boasted about. Forget short term solutions like the Rudd Government’s ridiculous alco-pop tax. Consumers become conditioned to price and will still pay a premium for their premixed lolly-water. We need a long term cultural change - it won’t be easy, and it won’t be an overnight fix - but it needs to be done.
